SYMANTEC CORPORATION I

Symantec is the global leader in information security, providing a broad range of software, appliances and services designed to help individuals, small and mid-sized businesses, and large enterprises secure and manage their IT infrastructure.

As a hybrid (designer/developer/manager) Web Producer within the Branding & Communications Department, I was mainly responsible for the design, development, and management of SymInfo, Symantec's primary news and information portal. I was also responsible for the design of some of the company's most prominent Intranet sites, the purchase and implementation of an Intranet-wide search appliance, and management of the guidelines that provide a unified and consistent user experience across Symantec's internal community.

SymInfo

I built SymInfo using standards compliant XHTML/CSS (on an ASP/.NET platform), providing lightening fast content delivery to 15,000 employees around the world. I designed SymInfo's templates to take advantage of modules (top destinations, industry news, press releases, etc), which are used to float important content topics to the home page. These modules can also be shared across various Intranet sites- providing connection points for relevant information while still being maintained from one central location.

During my tenure, SymInfo evolved to include several additional features:

  1. Intranet Directory: a compiled list of all internal resources, organized in a functional hierarchy.
  2. SymCards: a Microsoft Access database driven application that employees can use to create personalized "trading cards" that foster a more personalized working environment between employees all over the world.
  3. Dynamic Widgets: user polling, stock tickers, scrolling press releases, database driven global office locations, DHTML slide-show galleries, etc.
  4. Administration Tools: allows non-developers to update content modules.

Intranet Development

Based on the successful design direction I established for SymInfo, I expanded to include several other key company Intranets (including Marketing, Legal, Facilities, etc). The resulting user interfaces were built to accommodate each business unit's goals, while maintaining both the branding and the platform established for all of the sites on the server.
